EHS Software Developer Marks a Milestone
Demise of Competitors Creates Niche Service Market
July 27, 2001
Ann Arbor-based A V Systems, Inc., pioneer developer of MIRS,
modular software for environmental, health and safety data
management and compliance reporting, proudly celebrated 20
years in business in May 2001.
From its incorporation in 1981, A V Systems operated at the forefront
of the Personal Computer revolution. Beginning with large
consulting projects creating database systems for clients
such as the Detroit Institute of Arts, A V used and installed
the first PCs on the market, and later created an extensive
chemical inventory management database system for the Parke
Davis pharmaceutical company in 1986. In 1988, the company
first sold its flagship software, MIRS (Material Inventory
Report System), to address compliance issues of EPA SARA Title
III regulations, which came into effect in 1987. Modules covering
other EPA or OSHA regulations were added in subsequent years
as the respective regulations came into place. Having grown
from individual consulting projects to providing EH&S software
to thousands of regulated facilities, A V’s recent sales to
diverse clients such as Campbell’s Soup Company, Westinghouse
Corporation, Sauder Woodworking Company, Cooper Energy Services,
Bush Brothers & Company, and the California Correctional Institute,
attest to the comprehensive EH&S data management capabilities
of its MIRS software.
A long-time survivor in this software niche, A V has also
built a cottage industry of converting hazardous chemical
data from existing and out-of-date software packages into
their own MIRS modules. "As we have watched our competitors
merge or leave the business entirely, we have been able to
provide a unique benefit to potential clients," said Andy
Rudnik, founder and President of A V Systems. "Compliance
is paramount in this industry - government regulations require
that companies within certain industries retain hazardous
chemical information for 30 years. In a sense, A V rescues
companies saddled with orphaned EH&S software; packages that
are no longer supported or compliant." Three years after targeting
potential data conversion clients, this segment now comprises
about 10% of A V’s current client base. "We can provide clients
sizeable financial and timesaving benefits by converting the
company’s trapped data into usable records within our program,"
Rudnik continues. "The client saves huge data entry expenses
and avoids potentially devastating non-compliance fines, while
using MIRS, software with a thirteen-year track record of
proven reliability."

MIRS Covers New EPA SARA Section 313 Reporting Changes
February 14, 2001
Ann Arbor, MICHIGAN - A V Systems, Inc., pioneer in the regulatory compliance
management software field, announced that the company will
release MIRS version 7.10 in April 2001, complete with all
EPA SARA Section 313, Toxic Release Inventory chemical additions,
deletions, and reporting thresholds changes for Report Year
2000.
Among the major changes, a group of previously regulated chemicals
and additional new chemicals have been classified as Persistent
Bioaccumulative Toxices, or PBTs. With this new classification
comes significantly lower thresholds and even a newly-defined
compound category for 17 highly-regulated Dioxin and Dioxin-like
compounds that require reporting in different units of measurement.
"These EPA changes create significant challenges for companies
that had previously manually tracked and reported SARA section
313 listed chemical releases," said Andrew Rudnik, President
and CEO of A V Systems, Inc. "The newly added chemicals and
the varied thresholds make the TRI reporting process increasingly
complex. MIRS software eases the TRI reporting burden for
those companies, with its unique Release Calculation feature.
MIRS’ FORM R module provides the user step-by-step guidance
to ensure accurate Form R and Form A reporting." "When a user
tracks his or her chemical inventory in MIRS throughout the
year, the Form R report can be completed in as little as 20
minutes. That’s attractive when you consider that the EPA
published a recent estimate of 52.1 total hours per Form R
response in this year’s Toxic Chemical Release Inventory Reporting
Forms and Instructions," Rudnik adds. MIRS software provides
the EPA certified FORM R report--the only FORM R software
approved before the reporting deadline every year since 1988.
MIRS is a flexible, integrated modular software package which collects
environmental data and produces agency-mandated and ad hoc
reports for SARA, TRI, CAA, CWA, RCRA and DOT waste handling,
MSDS management and OSHA Hazard Communication. Celebrating
more a decade as the easy-to-use EHS modular software package,
MIRS offers 20+ modules, multi-user and multi-facility management
in LAN or WAN installations, and data import from existing
corporate systems.
